Shopping for a one-year-old sounds easyβuntil you actually start looking!
At this age, little ones are changing incredibly quickly. They may be learning to walk, saying their first words, figuring out how objects work, and becoming much more interested in exploring everything around them.
That makes the first birthday such a fun age to shop for. Instead of buying something they’ll lose interest in after a few days, you can choose gifts that encourage movement, creativity, problem-solving, pretend play, and independence.
I’ve put together gift ideas by category to make shopping a little easier.

π§ Educational & Developmental Gifts

π Bigger Gift Ideas
If grandparents, parents, or family members want to purchase one larger present instead of several smaller toys, consider:
- A play kitchen
- Foam climbing set
- Water table
- Toddler ride-on
- Learning tower
- Indoor slide
- Toddler table and chair set
- Outdoor play equipment
These can be particularly worthwhile because many will continue being used throughout the toddler years.
What Do You Buy a 1-Year-Old Who Already Has Everything?
If their toy collection is already overflowing, skip another random toy and consider an experience or practical gift instead.
A children’s museum membership, zoo membership, swimming lessons, toddler activity classes, personalized keepsake, contribution toward an education fund, or even a planned family outing can make a meaningful alternative.
You could also ask the parents what the child will need in the next six months. Sometimes the best gift is something they were already planning to buy.
What Should You Look for When Buying a Gift for a 1-Year-Old?
Always check the manufacturer’s age recommendation and safety information before purchasing.
For young toddlers, be especially cautious with toys containing small or detachable parts, button or coin batteries, strong magnets, long cords, or other potential hazards. Toys should also be sturdy enough to handle being dropped, thrown, chewed, and generally tested in every possible toddler-approved way.
And remember: every one-year-old develops at a different pace. Choose gifts based on the individual child’s abilities rather than assuming every toy labeled for a certain age will be appropriate for every child.
Final Thoughts
The best gifts for a one-year-old don’t necessarily have to be expensive or complicated.
At this age, toddlers are often happiest with toys that let them do somethingβstack it, push it, climb it, open it, pour it, scribble with it, or knock it over and start again.
If you’re building a wishlist, I would choose a mixture of developmental toys, books, active-play items, and one or two toys that can grow with your child.
And if you’re buying for someone else’s one-year-old, don’t be afraid to ask the parents what they actually need. They may be very grateful you asked before adding toy number 47 to the playroom!
